TLS faculty incorporate a wide balance of rigorous and engaging writing exercises. Students respond to text through writing out reading responses and are held to high expectations for written communication from first grade onward.
Writing instruction and strategies are taught explicitly while critical thinking is integrated bringing written content to higher levels and applications. Students conference with faculty on a regular basis and set goals in effort to develop consistently as writers.
Writer's Workshop is an interdisciplinary technique which increases fluency in writing through continuous, repeated exposure to writing. This technique uses guided lessons, independent writing and individualized goal setting conferences, along with presentations. Students are given many different writing opportunities in class, especially in response to lessons or read alouds.
