TLS Junior High Academy Grades 5-8
High School Prep Curriculum
The TLS Junior High Academy will focus on preparing students for high school (high school prep). The Academy will be even more challenging, engaging, and supportive by providing an academic environment that addresses the distinctive needs of early adolescents prior to high school. Our new program provides additional guidance so that each student explores new interests, refines intellectual integrity, grasps increasingly challenging academic concepts, builds collaborative relationships, develops confidence, and fosters independent thinking skills that will prepare them for high school and beyond.
The Junior High Academy provides coursework that offers not only traditionally-paced assignments, but provides differentiated grouping styles to offer remediation, and advanced work. The program emphasizes the concurrent development of work and study habits to ensure success in meeting the increasing demands of academic studies. Students will leave the TLS with solid cognitive reasoning, communication, and critical thinking skills. Subject areas will concentrate on taking the very best of teaching techniques, curriculum resources and blending them together in order to help students become ready for not only high school, but college. Science and social studies will integrate more rigorous writing responses and lab reports to improve 21st century skills in written communication.
What about 5th grade?
TLS has included 5th graders into Junior High, however these students are really in transition. Many TLS staff members and parents felt 5th graders needed limited transitions or class changes during the day due to varying maturity levels and organizational skills. TLS will help 5th graders transition fully by placing a strong emphasis on organizational and study skills, along with advanced math, writing, reading, and hands on labs.
